Once the Diwali visits are over, there may be several lovely gift boxes waiting to be enjoyed. Taking a few minutes to sort them makes it easier to keep track of what you have, follow the storage directions and avoid opening more packs than you need.
Nuts, dried fruits and flavoured mixtures are not all the same product. Their ingredients, processing and packaging can differ, so the instructions on the actual pack should guide your storage decisions. Here is a practical way to organise your festive gifts.
Read the pack before putting it away
Check each inner pack for its product name, date information and storage directions, including instructions that apply after opening. Keep the label even if you transfer the contents to another container. A quick photograph can help you retain the batch details and directions.
Do not give every item in a hamper the same storage deadline. Use the dates and instructions supplied for each product, and ask the seller if they are missing or unclear. A general internet storage chart should not be used to extend a date printed on your pack.
Give unopened gifts a sensible home
For products labelled for cool, dry storage, choose a cupboard away from the cooker, direct sunlight and damp areas. Avoid leaving gift boxes on a sunny windowsill or beside a heat-producing appliance simply because the packaging looks attractive there.
FoodSafety.gov's dry-food storage guidance recommends cool, dry, dark conditions and protection from insects and rodents. It also advises keeping food away from chemicals and other substances whose odours it may absorb. Always follow any more specific directions on your product.
After opening, keep moisture and odours out
Close resealable packaging securely. If you need another container, use a clean, completely dry, food-safe container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep nuts and dried fruits in separate containers unless the product was supplied as a mixture.
The University of California's consumer guidance on nuts explains that shelled nuts can absorb moisture and outside flavours. It recommends clean, moisture-free, odour-tight packaging. The same guidance notes that warmer storage conditions can reduce the time nuts retain their quality.
Put an opening-date label on the container and retain the original product information. Rather than repeatedly topping up an old jar, finish and clean it before refilling. That makes it easier to keep each product and its dates together.
Should the hamper go in the fridge?
Check each item individually. University of California guidance indicates that refrigeration or freezing can help many nuts retain quality for longer than room-temperature storage. This is not a reason to apply one rule to every gift box: coatings, other ingredients and product-specific directions still matter.
If the label recommends refrigeration, store the product accordingly in suitable sealed packaging. Keep it protected from strong-smelling foods. If you are unsure whether a particular flavoured nut, dried fruit or mixed product should be refrigerated or frozen, ask the seller before changing its storage conditions.
Open smaller amounts and check what you use
Keep unopened portions sealed until needed. The National Center for Home Food Preservation's guidance on dried foods explains that repeated opening exposes food to air and moisture. It recommends dry, well-sealed containers and says mouldy dried food should be discarded.
Set aside any pack with a damaged seal, signs of insects, mould or an unusual odour, and contact the seller if appropriate. Do not taste a questionable product to decide whether to keep it. Appearance and smell alone cannot confirm food safety.
Keep serving simple
Before sharing, check ingredients and allergen information and keep the packaging available for guests. Use separate serving utensils for separate products. Do not assume a food is suitable for someone with an allergy because a visible ingredient has been removed.
Choose one or two opened packs for your household's usual snacks or recipes, following their directions, instead of opening the entire hamper at once. Write a short list of unopened items so that the next box does not disappear at the back of the cupboard.
